Welcome to English at SSU! 

In the SSU English department, you have a wide variety of choices of Undergraduate and Graduate degrees to pursue. While working on your English degree you'll connect with a tight-knit community of artists, scholars, and researchers. You'll engage with powerful and meaningful ideas and works of literature while also building skills that will pave your way to a wide variety of careers.

Undergraduate

Majors

B.A. in English, with three options. Each option shares a core of courses and also includes its own unique specialized classes. You also have the option of taking courses across concentration with your electives.

B.A. in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing 

B.A. in English with a Concentration in English Education (pre teaching)

B. A. in English with a Concentration in Literature 

Minors

Minor in Critical Literacies & English Education (can be combined with any B.A. concentration except for the English Education concentration) 

Minor in English 

Minor in Linguistics (in cooperation with other SSU departments) 

 

Graduate 

The SSU MA Program has previously offered tracks in Creative Writing, Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition. As of Fall 2026, the SSU MA in English Program is currently being redesigned by department faculty. New students are not yet being admitted. If you are interested in the SSU MA in English Program, please contact the department office to be placed on the SSU MA in English Priority List for information about the English MA program. Those on the Priority List will receive information and updates about the program as soon as they are available.
